International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association
MENA Chapter
Brief History of the Chapter
Including the MENA region as a separate entity within the IHPBA/ EHPBA has been a dream for most of those practicing HPB within the Middle East and the Arab World. The reason behind that was the feeling that we are contributing a lot to our profession but our work and input is not recognized by the HPB World. The scarce publications from this region, lack of multi-centric studies between our centers, absence of a standardized training and accreditation systems that should be imposed on all HPB centers within our region and other logistic reasons, are some of the reasons. Now, that we realized the goal with the help of the IHPB/ EHPB presidents and councils, the path is clear to start achieving these goals in addition to the usual duties of a given chapter. The later comprise, including more members from all nations within the region and performing our biennial meeting together with our active participation in the international and European HPB meetings.
It took us 3 meeting, with 1 month interval between them, in Dubai, Cairo and Beirut to reach the final formulation seen below as we tried to include everybody and listen to all views. We took the A- EHPBA bylaws as a platform for our bylaws but we introduced some minor changes to suit our beginning chapter including a 15 member council with a maximum of 3 from a given country and having only 5 committees: membership, scientific, educational & training, executive and advisory.
