Fellowship report from Basavaraj M Biradarpatil

It was an over all awesome experience and I was lucky to be part of it as it was the only of its kind during my time, all the stalwarts in the field were present and shared a great deal of their expertise and knoweledge.  I was immensely benefitted and recommended the programme my colleagues who also took this fellowship. I request Dr Nandy sir and his team to carry on with this programme and help to train all those enthusiastic in the field and keen to learn the art of HPB surgery.

Fellowship report from Dr D Tanmay

The Sir Gyan burman fellowship was a nice brief experience for me as a beginner. I was exposed to the anatomy of the abdomen and various surgical principles which I feel will help me in my future. As I am preparing for doing a super-specialization in GI surgery it has helped me a lot while studying. More than all of this what I have always felt during these three months is that getting to be associated with Professor Dr Samiran Nundy is something I’ll cherish for a life time: he inspired hope in me and a thank you may not be enough for that. Because the experience was so good I cannot find flaws. Still I suggest, had there been a television in the OT which could show the operating field to fellows who are not washed it would be good. Sir I also feel other consultants should teach while operating like you do. I will always try to learn audit and data keeping sir because I remember one of your words “....I don’t want you do a 2 mm duct anastomoses ...most important is to learn data keeping.” I hope to work with Professor Dr Nundy again one day.

Fellowship report from Dr Asfar Ali

The Gyan Burman Fellowship provided me with extensive exposure of Gastro-intestinal and hepatobiliary surgery as well as live donor liver transplantation, in a short period of time. The spectrum ranged from benign diseases, malignancies, reoperative abdomens and abdominal wall reconstructions.

The Liver transplant surgeries at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital gave me an unparalleled insight into the techniques, donor/ recipient selection and preparation, as well as postoperative transplant care. The distinctive feature was the standardization of techniques and exemplary orchestra of the tranplant team.

Above all, the rigorous academic activies like journal clubs, topic/case presentations and prominent faculty lectures makes this Fellowship a coveted one.

My suggestion would be to incorporate Laparoscopy into the current GI, Colorectal and hepato-biliary procedures. I believe this will be of benefit, apart from patients, to the fellows and residents, who are expected to know both open and laparoscopic approaches to GI surgery once they come out of this coveted fellowship.

To conclude, I firmly believe that the driving force behind this prestigious Fellowship is Dr Nundy's religious commitment to share up-to-date and evidence based knowledge and the precision of the NUNDY STANDARD TIME thats exactly 5:30hrs ahead of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital Standard Time.

With highest regards,
Dr Asfar Ali

Fellowship report from Dr. Hiranmoy Das

My fellowship duration was from 22/11/10 to 22/03/11. It was my first exposure to high volume HBP & liver Transplantion surgery.

I joined the fellowship after 3 years post MS(Master of Surgery) Degree & the large volume exposure of HBP cases helped me understand the anatomy of this area. This fellowship developed my interest in HBP surgery & acted as a launching pad, in my further training in HBP surgery.

The Hostel facility was very comfortable.

I wish the fellowship long life. Dr. Nundy is doing a fabulous job.

Thanking You

Fellowship report from Dr. Rajashekar Mohan

The Gyan Burman Hepatobiliary Surgical Fellowship gave me an opportunity to learn complex Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery and Gastrointestinal Surgery. I developed a good understanding of the the pre-operative decision making process, preoperative workup, and post operative care. Pre-operative discussions, inter-departmental discussions (especially in the Radio-Diagnosis Department), and assisting at operations gave me an invaluable understanding of the complex anatomy of the liver. I could also participate in data compilation and documentation, and in the review and analysis of scientific articles, which taught me the proper conduct of these academic activities. The department conducts an excellent academic program. The fellowship also gave me the invaluable experience of training under Dr S. Nundy, Dr A. Soin, Dr Adarsh Chaudhary, Dr Vinay Kumaran and Dr Rahul Kakodkar.

Today, I work in a rural area, and I am able to apply the same principles, and practice the invaluable concepts, that I learnt during the fellowship.
