W. Scott Helton, MD, FACS
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of California at Irvine College of Medicine, Dr. Helton completed his surgical residency at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1986. He completed research fellowships in gastrointestinal peptide physiology at the University of Washington and surgical nutrition and metabolism at the Bringham and Womens Hospital. He then completed a clinical fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation at the University of Toronto prior to beginning his academic career in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington in 1991 where he stayed until 1998.
Dr. Helton was promoted to an associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle where he established a NIH-funded research program in parenteral nutrition and gastrointestinal physiology and a reputable clinical practice in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and laparoscopic surgery. While at The University of Washington he became recognized for his expertise in the surgical management of portal hypertension, and treatment of hepatic tumors.
From 1998 until 2006, Dr. Helton was Professor of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at The University of Ilinois at Chicago. While at UIC, he developed multidisciplinary programs for the treatment of liver, pancreas, and bile duct tumors; created a surgical education laboratory for surgical residents, fellows and practicing community surgeons; was program director for their minimally invasive surgical fellowship program and continued his research in nutrition, metabolism and macrophage biology.
In October, 2006, Dr. Helton left The University of Illinois at Chicago to become the Chair of Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, CT where he will continue to practice HPB surgery and oversee their surgical training program/
Dr. Helton is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and active member of several other professional organizations. He currently serves as secretary for the AHPBA, treasurer elect for the IHPBA, is a member of the American Board of Surgery GI subcommittee and is a member of the accreditation committee of the fellowship council that oversees fellowship training in non ACGME accredited programs in surgery. He is the author of 17 book chapters, over 100 peer-reviewed publications, the recipient of several clinical teaching awards and National Institutes of Health awards.
