Kenneth Warren Fellowship 2018/2019

IHPBA and the IHPBA Foundation are delighted to announce that the IHPBA Kenneth Warren Fellowship for 2018/19 has been awarded to Dr Georgios Antonios Margonis from Athens, Greece.

The objective of Dr. Margonis’ Kenneth Warren Fellowship research is to expand the use of genetic markers in the management of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM), from merely providing prognostic information to addressing two current challenges in CRLM surgery. First, genetic information will be used to guide surgical technique from “one-size-fits-all” to “individualized” surgical approaches. Second, it has been hypothesized that a subgroup of patients with biologically aggressive CRLM may derive minimal benefit from surgery and instead could be managed conservatively. To this end, genetic information will be used to aid patient selection for surgery vs systemic treatment alone, with the ultimate aim of re-examining the current practice of operating on all patients with technically resectable disease irrespective of risk profile. This multi-institutional effort will be led by the University of Berlin – Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin and the Johns Hopkins University and will also involve other 8 collaborating centers from Europe (Medical University of Vienna, Medical University of Graz, Haukeland University Hospital and Lille University Medical Center), Japan (Yokohama City University and Graduate School of Life Sciences Kumamoto University) and the USA (Stanford University School of Medicine and Digestive Disease Institute Cleveland Clinic).

Dr. Margonis will be working under the mentorship of Dr. Martin E. Kreis, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Professor of Surgery at the University of Berlin – Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Matthew J. Weiss, Associate Professor of Surgery and Oncology and Surgical Director of the Liver Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic at the Johns Hopkins University.

IHPBA would like to congratulate Dr. Margonis on becoming the Warren Fellow for 2018/19 and wish him all the best with this important project.
