The 7th World Congress of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association
The 7th World Congress in Edinburgh had a formidable challenge in meeting the successes of Brisbane (2000), Tokyo (2002) and Washington DC (2004). We had some anxieties regarding the support for the meeting given the changing international political situation but it was difficult to believe that all our planning delivered well beyond our expectations. The International Conference Centre proved an excellent venue and we were fortunate to have held the opening ceremony and reception immediately before the spectacular firework display that marked the end of the Edinburgh International Festival.
In excess of 1700 registered delegates, invited faculty and exhibitor registrants from 75 countries attended the meeting. We were honoured to have received a visit on the first full day of the Congress from Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal whose visit to the meeting and her perceptive speech to our association captivated the audience. The standard of presentation was maintained during the educational and scientific programme with all sessions well attended and supported. In hosting the Congress, the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland contributed and enhanced the programme considerably.
The Edinburgh weather was kind to us and the social programme and the draw of kilts, bagpipes and whisky seemed irresistible. The Gala Ceilidh at the Museum of Scotland was a highlight for all. It was our great pleasure to have hosted the World Congress and we trust that the momentum will gather force in Mumbai, Buenos Aires and Paris in future years.
