Education & Training Update

Pre-Operative Planning Modules

Over the past three years, we have been developing our library of Pre-operative Planning Modules and there are now 22 modules available for members on myHPB.  A few modules are also free to view on the trymyHPB Now page.

The "slowing down when you should" phenomenon is characteristic of expert surgical judgment.  It is the ability to transition to a higher level of attentiveness during critical moments in a procedure.

The educational resource focuses on recognising the anticipated procedure and patient-specific slowing down moments during preoperative planning.

Preoperative imaging is available, and the operating and consulting surgeons talk about how they plan the procedure, describing their “slowing down” moments.  Unedited operative videos show how any problems were dealt with, and the de-brief section allows the operating and consulting surgeons to provide multiple perspectives on the case.

Thank you to the HPB Surgeons who contribute their time and expertise and thank you also to the team in Toronto who have worked so hard to put this together.  This content is made possible through educational grants from:

Medbook for IHPBA

We are excited to announce that the Education & Training Committee, led by Dr Rebecca Minter, has been collaborating with Medbook to develop ‘Medbook for IHPBA’.  This is a centralised case log, training, evaluation and accreditation tool which facilitates the collection of standardised case experience across the globe.  This web/app-based tool allows for seamless evaluation of the fellow, the faculty, and the program.  Case log and evaluation data will be collected centrally and available to program directors and IHPBA leadership in aggregate and with benchmarking capability to compare experiences in different locations.  This tool will be a great benefit for our members and will also be very valuable to IHPBA as it will quickly give an overview and insight into HPB training worldwide as well as an understanding of the fellows’ learning curve, allowing evidence-based decisions about training to be made.

The IHPBA Foundation has generously funded 75 trainee subscriptions for year 1 of the project.  These will be offered to trainee members who are in a recognised HPB fellowship programme.  The tool is in the final testing phase and will be formally launched at the World Congress in Melbourne this September.  To find out more, please come along to the Education & Training Committee Session during the World Congress (23/09/19 at 8.00am) or visit the IHPBA booth.
