Krishnakumar Madhavan

Professor Krishnakumar Madhavan is an internationally recognised leader in liver and pancreatic surgery and organ transplantation, with a distinguished career spanning more than four decades across Asia and the United Kingdom.

He earned his MBBS from the University of Poona in 1979, followed by an MS in General Surgery from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, in 1981. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1989.

Professor Madhavan currently serves as Professor Emeritus at the National University of Singapore. He is a Past President of the Asia-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA) and a current elected member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His previous leadership roles include Head of the Department of Surgery at both the National University Health System and the National University of Singapore, Director of the Singapore National Liver Transplant Programme, and Co-Director of the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation. He also served as a Consultant Surgeon with the Lothian NHS Trust at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh from 1996 to 2007.

His research interests focus on hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly its genomics, biomarkers and treatment modalities, as well as liver transplantation techniques, portal hypertension, and the management of acute and chronic pancreatitis.

In recognition of his clinical and academic excellence, Professor Madhavan has received numerous honours, including the NUHS Mochtar Riady Pinnacle Master Clinician Award in 2015 and the NUHS Distinguished Senior Clinician Award in 2018. In 2025, he was awarded the A-PHPBA Distinguished Service Award.

Professor Madhavan will serve as the President of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) for the 2026–2028 term.
