IHPBA Webinar: When the First Surgery Is Not the Last: Adhesions and Long-Term Strategy in HPB Surgery
Adhesions are a common yet often underestimated challenge in hepatobiliary surgery, particularly for patients undergoing repeat abdominal procedures, staged liver resections, or complex oncological treatment where future surgery may be anticipated.
In this 45-minute webinar, “When the First Surgery Is Not the Last: Adhesions and Long-Term Strategy in HPB Surgery,” experts examine real-world clinical scenarios involving repeat liver surgery, including treatment pathways for colorectal liver metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma. The discussion explores how previous open and minimally invasive procedures can influence adhesion formation, operative complexity, conversion risk, future abdominal access, and surgical decision-making.
Drawing on insights from the Italian Registry of Minimally Invasive Liver Resections, the session also considers the potential role of anti-adhesion sheets and other preventive strategies in long-term surgical planning.
Learning outcomes include:
• Identifying patients at greater risk of adhesion-related surgical challenges
• Understanding how surgical history may affect repeat liver procedures
• Evaluating the potential role of adhesion-prevention strategies
• Applying registry evidence and clinical reasoning to operative planning
Recorded on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Intended for clinicians, researchers, trainees, and early-career professionals working in hepatobiliary and liver surgery.
